How the Volumetrics Eating Plan was Developed

Dr. Barbara Rolls became interested in eating behavior as a result of watching the eating behaviors of her parents when she was growing up.  Her dad was very thin and could eat pretty much anything.  Her mother became obese by eating the same foods that her dad ate.  Her mother eventually developed diabetes and cardiovascular disease and died in her early 70s.  Her dad continues to go strong in his 80s.

While doing research at Cambridge University in England, Dr. Barbara Rolls went from researching thirst to researching eating behavior and weight management.  The research done in England was funded by The Medical Research Council.  Dr. Rolls continued her research back in the States and was funded by The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.  Her research eventually led Dr. Rolls to write the book, The Volumetrics Eating Plan.

Our Review – The Volumetrics Eating Plan

The Volumetrics Eating Plan has a lot going for it!  It’s a very practical diet plan which teaches healthy eating behaviors.  One of the best aspects of this diet plan is that no foods are forbidden.  You do not have to deny yourself your favorite foods, and you do not have to go hungry.  Unlike diets that are based on deprivation, this is a diet plan that you can live with for the rest of your life! 

The cost of the Volumetrics Eating Plan is very reasonable…less than $11 for the Volumetrics book.  There are no monthly fees.  There are no tasteless, prepackaged meals to purchase.  You do not have to worry about straining the family budget to follow the Volumetrics plan.

Volumetrics encourages people to get plenty of exercise.  If you have been sedentary for awhile, Dr. Rolls recommends that you start out slowly and work up to getting 30 to 60 minutes of exercise almost everyday.  I’m a firm believer that exercise is an essential element to any weight loss program.

Once you buy the book, The Volumetrics Eating Plan, you will discover how you can lose weight without severely restricting what you eat.  You will learn to prepare meals and snacks that are lower in calories, will fill you up quickly, and will leave you feeling satisfied and happy.  As a matter of fact, according to Dr. Rolls, there are some cases in which you can actually eat more on the Volumetrics plan and still lose weight!

No Forbidden Foods

Rather than dividing foods into a good group and a bad group, Volumetrics encourages individuals to base their food choices on energy density (the number of calories in a specific amount of food).  If you eat foods that are high in energy density, you need to eat smaller portions to lose weight or to maintain your weight.  If, however, you choose foods with a lower energy density, you could eat larger portions and still shed pounds. 

Eat Sensibly

Basically, the Volumetrics Eating Plan is focused around eating sensibly.  If you eat more fruits and veggies and more fiber, you will be less likely to overindulge on the high-fat, high-calorie foods.  Although foods high in fats and calories are not banned from this diet, it is recommended that they be eaten sparingly.
